Bringing Dance to Care Homes: Movement, Joy, and Connection Across Generations

Updated: Feb 14

At Dew Dance, we believe in the power of movement to spark joy, evoke memories, and bring people together. That’s why we’ve launched At the Movies, a brand-new dance performance and workshop programme designed specifically for care homes in Buckinghamshire, North Berkshire, and East Oxfordshire.

This project has been shaped through our collaboration with the Fremantle Trust throughout 2024 and early 2025. In summer 2024, we visited Sir Aubrey Ward House in Marlow, where we, alongside fellow dance artist Katie Mason, facilitated a range of seated movement workshops for residents. These sessions gave us valuable insight into how dance can engage and uplift care home communities.

Using what we learned, we developed At the Movies, a bespoke care home dance show inspired by classic films and timeless music. In early February 2025, we proudly presented this new work to the staff and residents of Sir Aubrey Ward House—and the feedback has been incredible! Their enthusiastic response has inspired us to bring this joyful experience to more care homes across the region.

Why Dance in Care Homes?

Dance is more than just entertainment—it’s a way to engage minds and bodies, reduce isolation, and create shared moments of happiness. Studies have shown that movement can improve balance, coordination, and cognitive function while lifting spirits. Our performances and workshops cater to all mobility levels, ensuring that everyone, whether seated or standing, can participate in a way that suits them.

A Journey Through Film and Music

At the Movies is inspired by classic films and timeless music, making it instantly recognisable and enjoyable for residents. From the elegance of Fred Astaire’s Cheek to Cheek to the feel-good charm of Let’s Go Fly a Kite, we take residents on a journey filled with nostalgia, laughter, and light-hearted fun.

Each performance features interactive elements, props like scarves, and simple movements residents can join in with, making the experience both engaging and uplifting.

Let’s Dance!
